Greek police paralyzed Rom, European Court of Human Rights rules. 22. 6. 2007
Greek Helsinki Monitor (GHM) expresses great satisfaction on the 21 June 2007 European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) unanimous conviction of Greece in the Case of Karagiannopoulos.
The application No. 27850/03 was submitted to the ECtHR by GHM.
According to the ECtHR, Greece violated twice Article 2 (right to life) of the European Convention on Human Rights, both in its substantive part (a police officer shot then 17-year old Rom Ioannis Karagiannopoulos who has since remained 100% invalid) and in its procedural part (there was no effective investigation into the near fatal shooting), and must award the victim 120,000 euros for pecuniary and non-pecuniary damage.
The events of 26 January 1998 that led to the conviction and the ECtHR ruling are briefly described in the Court’s release attached.
