Past and current activities

Ø Project Čhave

In 2006 in cooperation with four other organizations Dzeno started to implement the project called "Čhave" (in romani "children"). The main goal of this project is to establish the web of internet clubs in Czech primary schools. In these clubs there will be people instructed to teach children how to work with internet usefully. There will be also modern elearning programs available, which will help students with theirs school tasks and will give them also an opportunity for further education. The goal group of the project are children from 11 to 16 years of age, who are in access to education disadvantaged by theirs social background (e.g. children of immigrants, roma children etc.).

Ø THINK TANK project

Since fall 2006 Dženo is the coordinator of a cluster of organizations engaged to lobby the government to adopt a national strategy for Roma education. Members of this group, in addition to Dženo, are Association Romodrom, Association Athinganoi, Roma Internet Radio Rota and Mr. Cyril Koky, Regional Government of Central Bohemia Region and coordinator of Roma advisors.

Ø Conference on “Position of Roma Minority in Education System in Czech Republic”

Dzeno organized this international conference in Prague on 29-30/09/2006 in Hotel Krystal. The conference was the first step to hit the mark to create the cluster of associations actually involved in the Think Tank project.

Ø ROTA Journalism Course


Since February 2006, Dženo has been operating a journalism course for young Roma. The program makes use of lecturers from the media(including Radio Rota)in the hopes of preparing their students for a career in the media world.

Ø RAXEN_CC

From September 2003, Dženo participates in RAXEN_CC – PHARE Project to establish 10 National Focal Points of EUMC in the CEECs.

Ø Published Media Presentation Analysis of the Roma Issue

In 2003 Dženo published the Media Presentation Analysis of the Roma Issue. The Analysis covers Czech media in period January 1, 1996 – December 31, 2002. The whole text is available on Analysis page.

Ø Roster Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the UN

In July 2003, the Economic and Social Council decided to grant Roster consultative status to the Dzeno Association.

Ø Romany Internet Radio Rota

In 2002 Dženo started a worldwide broadcast of Romany Radio ROTA via the Internet in three languages--Romany, English and Czech. Dženo hopes that the experience of Romany journalists from this work will be transferable upon the creation of Romany editorial offices in Radio Free Europe and the Voice of America.

Ø Amaro Gendalos Magazine

Amaro Gendalos (Our Mirror) was established in 1997, and focuses on the cultural, social and political life of Romany in the Czech Republic and abroad.

Ø Media monitoring and analysis

Since 1996, Dženo has been carrying out a project to monitor and complete long-term analysis of how the Czech media informs the public about the Romany minority. These analyses are also used to create individual articles about the situation of the Romany minority in the Czech Republic.

Ø Collaboration with International Organization for Migration (IOM)

Dženo works with IOM on numerous activities, such as conferences, seminars, and exchange of information, as well as specific projects, such as Return and Reintegration of Roma (RCAI). For RCAI, Dženo will research and evaluate return projects in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Ø Informative service at www.dzeno.cz

The internet pages of Dženo Association – http://www.dzeno.cz – were created in March 1999. The website provides current Romany news and information in three different languages– Romany, Czech and English.

Ø Information exchanges with other Romany press agencies

Dženo cooperates in information exchanges with Romany press agencies in Slovakia and Hungary, and publishes articles that concern issues of mutual interest.

Ø Stability Pact Consultant

In 2001 and 2002, Dženo participated in consultant activities for the OSCE Stability Pact.

Ø Legal Assistance

Dženo Association helps to arrange legal assistance for socially deprived Romany citizens.

Ø World conference against racism and xenophobia

Dženo was the only Romany organization in the Czech Republic to take part in the 2001 World International Conference against racism and xenophobia in Durban, South Africa.

Ø Educational course – preparation of regional Romany leaders

In 1999 and 2000, Dženo organized an educational course for regional Romany activists in order to enhance their ability to act in professional and leadership roles with state offices, media and other organizations.

Ø Student exchanges at the Romany Press Center in Budapest

Dženo followed up on previous projects by organizing for graduates of the local media course to study at the Romany Press Center in Budapest in 2000.

Ø Conference on “Creation of a Positive Picture of Romany in the Media”

In 1999, Dženo organized an International conference entitled ”Creation of a Positive Picture of Romany in the Media” in cooperation with the Czech Republic Parliament.

Ø Study stays of media students in Czech majority media

Dženo organized for Romany graduates to study with Czech mainstream media agencies in 1999, with written press as well as audiovisual agencies (TV Prima, Mladá Fronta DNES etc.)

Ø Media course for Romany journalists

In cooperation with UK-based Minority Rights Group from Great Britain, Dženo organized a media course to teach journalism basics for Romany youth. The course was taught in four countries in 1998-99, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania.

Ø Creation of TV program - Romale

From 1994-1999, Dženo produced a monthly Romany program called Romale that focused on the current problems of the Romany community in the Czech Republic.

Ø UNESCO Report

Dženo assisted in the creation of a 1996 report on the Romany minority in the Czech Republic for UNESCO, as well as a similar report for the Government of the Czech Republic. Dzeno also produced a study on ” Free time spending of unemployed Romany youth in Smižany, Slovakia.”

Planned activities

  • Promote human rights, focusing on the Romany community via media and negotiations with governmental and non-governmental organizations.

  • Continue working on the wide-range analysis of the past decade of Czech media. The report will be distributed to a number of UN and other organizations involved in minority and human rights. Dženo intends to continue with the media monitoring in future years.

  • Answered specific requests for information and documentation.

  • Create a group of volunteers for the organization of conferences and seminars.

  • Continue organizing educational seminars and work meetings.
